After reading all of the brave victims stories on social media about their experiences regarding r*pe and sexual assault, I was disheartened, frustrated, and angered that these things continue to happen consistently at East High School. However I wanted to use this anger in a positive way and I began to think about what consent and sexual education I had received from East. It then came to my attention that throughout my 4 years at East, I had never received any formal education on what consent looks like and what sexual assault exactly is. This is exactly the root of the problem and why sexual assault stories repeatedly surface time and time again at East High School and throughout DPS. The only way to start to change rape culture is through education, and it is of my belief that a high school should be the center of this education. I hope through this petition that we can have a MANDATORY consent and sexual assault education assembly at EVERY SINGLE DENVER PUBLIC HIGH SCHOOL. This would not be a once in four year assembly. This would be required every year for every high school student in DPS because education and re-education is how we can begin to fix this issue. Thank you.
