Dear Mayor and City Council of Denton, TX,

I support the adoption of a comprehensive non-discrimination ordinance that will protect people from being discriminated against due to their sexual orientation, gender identity, or gender expression.

Currently, statewide laws in Texas offer no protections for the LGBTQ community from discrimination in areas such as employment, housing, and public accommodations. Yes non-discrimination protections are favored by a majority of all Texans: 66% of all Texans; 68% of people in the DFW region, and majorities of every ethnic group.

Additionally, NDO's already exist in six Texas cities, including 3 right here in the metroplex: Dallas, Fort Worth, and even Plano.

A 2010 national survey of transgender people found that 79% of respondents from Texas reported having experienced harassment or mistreatment at work, and 47% reported having been discriminated against in hiring, promotion, or job retention because of their gender identity: 26% reported losing a job, 22% reported being denied a promotion, and 45% reported not being hired because of their gender identity or expression.

We are better than this. We are Denton.

Please support a comprehensive nondiscrimination ordinance that protects the equal rights of all Denton residents, regardless of who they are or who they love.
