GEMEENTE, NEEM DE KLIMAATURGENTIE SERIEUS
Het water staat aan onze lippen!
De klimaatcrisis wordt met de dag tastbaarder in onze leefomgeving. Door de hevige regenval van midden juli veranderde Valkenburg in een rampgebied. Een verpleeghuis en een hospice moesten worden ontruimd. In Parkstad liepen kelders en autowegen onder water. Duizenden bewoners van Maastricht en Roermond moesten worden geëvacueerd. Ook in Luik trad de Maas buiten de oevers. We kunnen ervan uitgaan dat dit soort extreme weersomstandigheden vaker zal voorkomen. En dat dit ten koste gaat van mensenlevens, zoals de tientallen doden die nu al in Duitsland te betreuren vallen. De klimaatcrisis eist niet alleen in verre landen levens.
Er moet nu iets gebeuren, het water staat aan onze lippen! Den Haag, het provinciebestuur en de diverse gemeentes hadden dit kunnen zien aankomen.
Sinds begin 2020 hebben klimaat- en sociale organisaties in Maastricht de handen ineen geslagen om de gemeente onder druk te zetten het klimaatprobleem serieus te gaan bestrijden. We moeten alternatieven formuleren voor politieke leiders die veel te weinig doen. Daarom hebben we acht klimaateisen opgesteld (zie hieronder). We hebben geen planeet B!
Goed nieuws is dat in navolging van Maastricht groepen in Parkstad, Roermond en Weert ook klimaatcoalities vormden.
Steun daarom onze klimaateisen aan de gemeentes en teken de petitie. We gaan in de herfst actievoeren om de klimaateisen op de agenda van de gemeenteraadsverkiezingen in 2022 te krijgen.
Acht eisen voor een duurzaam Maastricht
1. Gratis Openbaar Vervoer - Nederland heeft het duurste openbaar vervoersysteem van de EU. We hebben meer openbaar vervoer nodig en het moet gratis zijn.
2. Schone Lucht voor Ons en Onze Kinderen - De stad Maastricht heeft een van de vuilste luchten van het land. Wij eisen de invoering van een lage emissiezone voor de stad en omgeving.
3. Stimuleer Lokale Zaken - Maastricht moet de lokale en circulaire economie stimuleren en lokale initiatieven ondersteunen.
4. Maak Woningen en Gebouwen Duurzaam - Alle huizen en gebouwen moeten koolstofneutraal zijn. Dit mag niet ten koste gaan van de mensen.
5. Verbied Plastic voor Eenmalig Gebruik - Maastricht moet plastic voor eenmalig gebruik verbieden en plastic uit de Maas halen voordat het weggestuurd wordt.
6. Een Rechtvaardige end Sociale Transitie van Banen - Maastricht moet nieuwe klimaat banen creëren en degenen die in de transitie hun baan verliezen, heropleiden. De klimaattransitie moet sociaal zijn of zal niet zijn.
7. Informeer en Betrek de Mensen - Maastricht moet zijn burgers informeren en betrekken bij de crisis. Individuen moeten het laatste woord hebben, niet de economische stakeholders.
8. Fossiele Brandstoffen Uitfaseren - Maastricht moet af van fossiele brandstoffen en moet ervoor zorgen dat de industriële sector hetzelfde doet.

CITY COUNCIL, TAKE THE CLIMATE URGENCY SERIOUS
We are up to our necks in water!
The climate crisis is getting ever more tangible in our communities. As a result of the heavy rainfall in mid July Valkenburg turned into a disaster area. A nursing home and a hospice had to be evacuated. In Parkstad cellars and highways flooded. Thousands of inhabitants of lower parts of Maastricht and Roermond had to be evacuated. The Maas also overflowed at our neighbouring city of Liege. We can only expect that these extreme weather events will become more common as time goes on. And that this comes at the cost of human lives, such as the dozens of deaths already occurring in Germany. The climate crisis is not only claiming lives in distant countries.
Action is needed now, we are up to our necks in water! The Hague, the provincial government and the various municipalities could have seen this coming.
Since the beginning of 2020 climate and social organisations in Maastricht have combined forces to put pressure on the city council to take necessary measurements against the climate crisis. We need to build alternatives to our political leaders who don’t take this urgency seriously. That is why we composed 8 climate demands (see below).There is no planet B!
Encouraging is that following the actions of Maastricht, groups in Parkstad, Roermond en Weert,also formed climate coalitions.
Please support our demands to the city councils and sign our petition. In autumn we will campaign to get the climate demands on the agenda of the municipal elections of 2022.
Eight demands for a sustainable Maastricht
1. Free public transport - The Netherlands has the most expensive public transport system of the EU. We need more public transport, and we need it to be free.
2. Clean air for us and our children - Maastricht has one of the most polluted airs of the Netherlands. We demand the introduction of a low (Emission zone?) for the city and its surroundings.
3. Support Local Business - Maastricht needs to stimulate the local and circular economy and support local initiatives.
4. Make Homes and Buildings Sustainable - All houses and buildings need to be carbon neutral, without it being at the expense of the people.
5. Ban Single use Plastics - Maastricht needs to ban single use plastics and take plastics out of the Maas before it flows away.
6. A just and social transition of jobs - Maastricht needs to create new climate jobs and re-educate those who lose their jobs as a result of the transition from a Fossil based economy towards more sustainability
7. Inform and involve people - Maastricht needs to inform and involve its citizens with this crisis. Individuals need to have the last word, not economic stakeholders.
8. Phase out Fossil fuels - Maastricht needs to get rid of fossil fuels and needs to ensure that the industrial sector does the same thing.
