Democratic Governors: Defend Democracy

Democratic Governors: Defend Democracy
The Issue
The clash between federal power and state rights has reached a boiling point, forcing us to confront urgent questions about who truly safeguards democracy in America.
President Trump has escalated federal intervention by sending troops into Washington, D.C., taking control of the Metropolitan Police with promises of “long-term extensions.” He’s dispatched National Guard units and Marines to Los Angeles—over California’s objections—and threatened similar deployments in New York, Baltimore, and Oakland. At the same time, ICE, now armed with a $175 billion budget, will wield resources that rival those of many national militaries.
In a recent conversation with Steve Schmidt, Malcolm Nance drew a direct comparison between these federal actions and the Intolerable Acts of 1774—the British laws that tried to crush colonial resistance, but instead sparked a revolution. Schmidt describes a constitutional path forward, rooted in the checks and balances designed to protect us all.
This petition, inspired by Schmidt’s appeal, calls on Democratic and principled Republican governors to issue a joint statement of fundamental principles—demanding the federal government halt its unlawful encroachment on state authority. We urge governors to take concrete actions, including:
- Passing new laws and empowering state police and State Defense Forces to protect the constitutional rights of their citizens and residents.
- Coordinating with other states to defend democratic government while minimizing the risk of confrontation and escalation.
- Putting in place strong safeguards for future elections to guarantee free, fair voting and prevent suppression.
The Constitutional Foundation
Schmidt’s call reminds us that the Constitution gives states a critical role in checking abuses of federal power. The Founders were wary of a federal government that could undermine individual liberty, so they gave states key powers to keep federal authority in check.
Governors Wes Moore, Gavin Newsom, J.B. Pritzker, and Kathy Hochul are rallying America in defense of democracy itself. Because these governors have demonstrated leadership, we are calling on them to convene Democratic governors to defend our democracy. It is now time for the rest of the Democratic governors to join this fight.
