Demilitarise Universities WorldWide

The Issue

To the Global Academic Community,

We are writing as conscientious scholars worldwide, urging universities to promote ethical investment, demilitarization, and solidarity with oppressed communities.

The ongoing conflict and human rights violations in Palestine, particularly the recent escalations, necessitate urgent action. Since October 7, over 36,000 Palestinian civilians (including 13000+ children) have lost their lives, with numerous tragedies such as the Flour Massacre where 118 Palestinians fetching aid were brutally massacred and the Tent Massacre whereby 40 civilians died with five babies reportedly beheaded, highlighting the brutal nature of the conflict. These acts, coupled with the continued occupation of Palestinian territories since 1948 following the Balfour Declaration, represent severe breaches of fundamental human rights and compromise the very foundation of the Sustainable Development themes

As committed academics, we urge universities to take the following actions:

1. Publicly disclose all financial relationships, particularly with companies involved in arms manufacturing and distribution, ensuring transparency and alignment with ethical standards.

2. Divest from arms companies and entities complicit in occupations, apartheid regimes, and genocides. Remove these companies from university activities and form no new partnerships with entities involved in warfare or human rights violations.

3. End academic collaborations with institutions involved in human rights abuses and commit to forming no new partnerships with them, upholding academic integrity and solidarity.

4. Support students from Palestine with bursaries, scholarships, and hardship funds. Protect the rights of staff and students to protest and express solidarity with oppressed communities—issue official statements condemning human rights abuses.

5. Invest in reconstructing educational infrastructure in affected regions, providing funding and resources to foster education and development.

These actions align with global academic commitments to development, peace, security, and inclusivity. By taking these steps, universities will demonstrate ethical leadership and social responsibility.

This letter represents scholars and students worldwide dedicated to fostering a more just, equitable, and peaceful world.

We urge academic institutions to take these recommendations seriously and act decisively. We look forward to university leaders making official statements and taking concrete actions toward demilitarization.

Thank you for your attention to these urgent matters.

Sincerely,

Scholars & Students Worldwide
