The Issue

Twitter is the most popular micro-blogging platform with millions of active users using it every day, to not just connect with people, but stay up-to-date with the latest news about the things they love and more.

Ever since Elon Musk bought Twitter, many users left for Mastodon, a not-for-profit decentralized and open-source alternative that can't be sold (even to a billionaire) and is designed for the people.

Why have many been moving? Thanks to Elon, there have been several changes that many general users have not been a huge fan of, such as making basic verification part of Twitter Blue and asking money to be verified, and downranking posts and people who don't have Twitter Blue and giving those who paid a much higher priority and visibility across the platform. (What gamers often call "pay-to-win"). This also creates an issue for people from developing countries where the 8 bucks can translate to an expensive price in their currency just to be able to be seen by others on Twitter. It is very important for such a platform to be accessible to all people.

Twitter also made bot API paid, no longer allows third-party applications, which allowed users to access twitter through other clients such as the popular widely known "tweetbot" (which has moved to Mastodon with ivory now) and many developers solely or mainly rely on these clients/bots for revenue, and they were forced out, which has risked their jobs and pushed them to move over to Mastodon where everything is open source, decentralized and not for profit, where their work won't be invalid one day because the API will always remain free.

Twitter has also been filled with ads more than ever, not just an increase in ads on the home feed, but there are ads in the comments section as well!

Popular media outlets such as NPR has also decided to leave Twitter thanks to being falsely labeled as government-funded, but they still haven't joined Mastodon as of this writing. Now this is where this petition comes in, not just for NPR though.

While many users have moved and are ready to move to Mastodon, we are held back thanks to companies and corporations still on Twitter such as from Samsung to McDonalds, majority of the media outlets and other popular celebrities  (some have even decided to pay for Twitter blue, when no such thing is needed on Mastodon!).

To put it simply, we users are held back from moving to a decentralized alternative where a central power can't have abusive-level control on a platform, though companies (who make the products we love), media outlets that keep us updated with the latest news, to even popular celebrities that we follow on Twitter, are not on Mastodon.

These companies that make products we buy, are only profitable and exist because of us and our money. These media outlets only exist because we read their news. These celebrities exist because we made them popular.

It's time for us the users, by signing this petition, show your support and let these companies, media outlets, and celebrities know that we users would love to see them on the decentralized, open source, and for the people micro-blogging platform!
