Hi, Nicole Corrado,

Thank you for sharing your concerns with us. As an animal welfare organization, we take this issue very seriously.

Our approach to wildlife management is based on preventive and non-lethal measures. We promote these methods to the public and implement them ourselves. The Montreal SPCA does not use poison or glue traps. When necessary, we humanely capture rodents using non-lethal traps and release them in a safe location. However, bait boxes were placed in certain areas of our building a long time ago by an external contractor. Thanks to your vigilance, we have removed the boxes, which no longer contained bait, and have contacted our contractor to take them back.

As we store pet food in our facility, we occasionally have to deal with the presence of rodents such as mice. For biosecurity reasons—particularly to protect the injured, sick, and vulnerable animals in our care—it is essential to prevent the uncontrolled movement of animals like rodents, who may carry pathogens that could pose a risk to our residents.

We appreciate you taking the time to suggest possible solutions. This will help us better equip members of the public who sometimes turn to us for advice on how to prevent rodent-related nuisances. We hope this explanation addresses the concerns raised in your petition.

Please don’t hesitate to write to us again if you have any further questions.

Kind regards,

The Montreal SPCA
