Despite the Animal Welfare Act 2006 making it an offence to cause unnecessary suffering to any animal, animal cruelty cases still persist nationwide and especially in York. It is troubling to note that, in many of these cases, offenders are given an opportunity to plead guilty in exchange for reduced punishment or charges, diluting the enforcement of animal rights. This discouraging trend affects our fight against animal cruelty tremendously and contradicts the very essence of established animal welfare laws.

We request that the District Attorney (DA) of York takes a steadfast stance against this deplorable practice by prohibiting plea deals in all animal cruelty cases. Not only will this uphold the law, but it will also implore stronger enforcement of animal welfare and rights across the region, deterring individuals from such heinous acts. Moreover, it will ensure that culprits are appropriately penalised and re-educated about the importance of animal welfare, thus fostering a safer environment for our animal companions.

The Humane Society reports that nearly 1 million animals a year are abused due to domestic violence (source: Humane Society). Addressing this issue squarely by preventing plea deals conclusively sends the message that animal cruelty is a serious offence, and it needs to be treated as such.
