Demand York Council Reduced Speed Limit to 20MPH in Poppleton Villages

The Issue

Traffic is a big concern and is a direct challenge to the safety of our children and the overall wellbeing of our community.

We are calling for a reconsideration of the 30mph speed limit in these villages and a change to 20MPH across the entire village.  This would help us live in a safer and more liveable village.

Studies clearly indicate a correlation between high speed limits and increased casualties on the road. A study carried out by the British Medical Journal found that lowering urban speed limits to 20mph resulted in 42% fewer road casualties. (British Medical Journal, 2020)

Reducing the speed limit from 30mph to 20mph also has beneficial impacts on the environmental front. Lower speeds translate into decreased emission levels, ultimately contributing to cleaner air and a healthier living environment. According to a report by the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence, lower speed limits can effectively cut air pollution. (NICE, 2017)

Additionally a 20MPH limit would likely reduce the volume of traffic 'rat-running' though the village.

In light of these facts, we call on York Council to take immediate action and consider changing the speed limit of the villages of Upper Poppleton and Nether Poppleton from 30mph to 20mph. It's time we prioritise the safety of our children and the wellbeing of our residents over convenience of commuters who do not live in the village
