The Issue

SAVE THE CROWN UPTOWN THEATRE!

Wichita has a beautiful opportunity to come together and celebrate our shared heritage! An active review window is currently open for the historic 98-year-old Crown Uptown Theatre, and we are launching a positive, community-driven movement to ensure this iconic landmark shines brightly for generations to come.

We are uniting as taxpayers, homeowners, creators, and residents to present our local government with a blueprint for a self-sustaining community renaissance. Our zero-taxpayer-cost Multi-Purpose Concepts model envisions a strong financial future for the Crown Uptown entirely within its existing 850-occupancy neighborhood limits.

By adding community uses—such as senior programs, creative markets, weddings and events, classes, neighborhood meetings and other activities—while fully preserving its traditional performing arts, the Crown can become a busy community center with opportunities to generate revenue throughout the week.

This community plan can have a huge positive impact on College Hill—but more than that, it could serve as a model for developing additional community hubs and building better, stronger neighborhoods throughout Wichita.

The opportunity is clear: the Crown Uptown is ready to thrive.

We respectfully urge Mayor Lily Wu and the entire Wichita City Council—Joseph Shepard, Becky Tuttle, Mike Hoheisel, Dalton Glasscock, J.V. Johnston and Maggie Ballard—to use every available legal means to stop the current demolition effort and pursue strong, permanent local historic protection for the Crown Uptown Theatre.

Let's look past the friction of the past, protect our city's character, preserve this magnificent Wichita landmark, and work together to give the Crown a bright and financially sustainable future!

I will support the delay, and did support putting it on the historical registry when it came up last. I’ll do what I can to preserve the building, it is a gem and it’s unfortunate what has been happening with it. This might not totally stop the process, only delay it, but it’s the best we can do with the tools we have available.
