Demand Waterless Cooling for Cloud Data Centers & AI

Demand Waterless Cooling for Cloud Data Centers & AI

The Issue

Everyday more and more water is being used up by cloud data centers and this water is the same that people need to survive. Just a medium-sized data center could consume +/- 100 million gallons of water every year just for cooling down its servers. This is even more concerning considering the fact that these data centers will only increase in demand as the development of technology continues. Specifically the development AI is posing as a problem for our freshwater sources.

The Solution:

With how big AI is around the world it is almost impossible to stop the need for data centers, however there are many alternate methods we can turn to for cooling our water. Many data centers currently utilize open-loop evaporative cooling which can consume around 70% of water in the system. However, this number varies based on heat, so climate change will only contribute to the amount of water consumed. This system clearly needs a replacement and immersive cooling with dielectric fluid would do great. Using dielectric fluid would alloy you to completely submerge the servers in the coolant allowing for a much more efficient system. With this process, much less water is consumed, but of course this solution comes with its drawbacks. Making dielectric fluid requires extra steps than simply taking water from a source, and the costs also come up a lot higher. Despite these drawbacks this solution is still viable, and with future advancements  of dielectric fluid any of its drawbacks can be fixed. So, join our petition and help us push this solution out to all cloud data centers around the world.
