Demand UW System Divest from BlackRock!
The Issue
Demand UW System divest from BlackRock! No more funding for Israel's war on Gaza!
We demand that the University of Wisconsin System direct the State of Wisconsin Investment Board (SWIB) to divest the $584 million that the UW system has invested with BlackRock. BlackRock is a massive US-based asset manager that is profiting enormously off Israel’s war on Gaza due to its huge shares in weapon manufacturers and military contractors such as Boeing ($7.78 billion), Lockheed Martin ($7.5 billion), Northrop Grumman ($4.5 billion), and General Dynamics ($3.4 billion). These US companies manufacture the weapons, jets, and surveillance systems that the Israeli government uses to kill Palestinians. Because these companies have grown much richer since the October 7th attack by Hamas on Israel and Israel’s brutal retaliation on the civilians of Gaza and the West Bank, BlackRock and UW have both reaped the benefits of those profits. Instead of investing this money into corporations funding the mass murder of Palestinians, UW System should invest in its workers and students by paying all of its workers a real living wage, prevent the defunding of UW System schools, and by funding services to address the needs of underrepresented students. Palestinian Trade Unions have called on workers and organized labor globally to halt the production and shipment of war materials to Israel. We must answer that call here in Wisconsin by pressuring the UW System schools to divest from profiteers of war and massacre.
