Rachel Birney, a graduate student at the University of Southern California (USC), was caught on camera tearing down posters of kidnapped Israelis from the October 7 terrorist attack, and she did so while laughing. Despite issuing a public apology, she continues her studies in the PhD program at the School of Natural Science & Mathematics and holds a position as a Teaching Assistant (TA) in Physics.

This incident raises serious concerns about her ability to maintain an unbiased and respectful learning environment for all students. As a TA, she is in a position of power where students are forced to interact with her, potentially affecting their grades due to her biases.

We believe that USC should uphold its commitment to creating an environment that respects all perspectives. By allowing Birney to continue as a TA despite her disrespectful actions towards victims of terrorism, USC is failing its students.

It's time for USC administration to take action by removing Rachel Birney from her role as TA in the physics department. We demand accountability for actions that promote bias and disrespect within our educational institutions.
