The Great Salt Lake is collapsing and Utah state officials are still dragging their feet.

Decades of unchecked upstream water diversions have pushed the lake to historic lows. As it dries, toxic dust from the exposed lakebed is blowing into nearby communities. Wildlife that once thrived there—millions of birds, including eared grebes and American white pelicans—are vanishing. And still, there is no meaningful state plan to stop the destruction.

In 2023, conservation and community groups filed a lawsuit demanding Utah fulfill its legal duty to protect the lake. State officials tried to block the case, but a judge just ruled it can proceed. This is our moment to demand bold, immediate action.

We call on Governor Spencer Cox and state lawmakers to stop wasting time in court and start saving the Great Salt Lake. That means cutting excessive water diversions, enforcing real conservation policies, and protecting the public from the growing health risks of a dying lake.

This is one of the West’s greatest natural treasures. We won’t let it disappear without a fight.
