On Monday, I met with Steve Gaut, Vice President of Public Relations at UPS, to deliver our 380,000 petition signatures.
We were met by Mr. Gaut and security before we even pulled into the parking lot. I was escorted in and out of the building. Mr. Gaut informed me that they had seen petitions like mine in the past, but had never agreed to meet with another petition starter before. We talked about my husband's heat stroke and the many similar stories I've seen pouring in from all of you. He then told me that UPS planned to change nothing.
I'm angry. I'm frustrated. But I'm also fired up.
Why would UPS put on such a show to intimidate me? Why would they bring out a security detail to meet with me, the wife of a driver from New Jersey? Why would they send out top execs just to tell me they had no plans to do anything differently?
I think they're scared of us. Well, they should be -- because I'm not backing down.
So here's what you can do next:
- Keep the personal stories coming. Drivers: what are you experiencing in your trucks? Family members: what's it like sending your husband, son, niece, etc. to work in these conditions? UPS customers: who is your UPS driver and what do they mean to you?
- Do you have contacts that could help us? Someone at OSHA? How about Teamsters? Or maybe a professional -- physician, lawyer, etc. -- who cares about workers rights?
- You can send me a message with any of the above on Facebook, send me an email at ttmkrn@gmail.com or leave a comment on the petition.
Thank you so much for your support. The fight continues,
Theresa
