Petitioning UK retailers, Environment Secretary Andrea Leadsom

Demand UK retailers to ban plastic straws!

Over 500 million plastic straws are produced every single day, only to be used for a few minutes before being thrown in the bin or littered. Eventually, millions of these straws end up in our oceans, harming our sea life as seen in a cringe-inducing video that's gone viral, where a team of scientists pull a plastic straw from the nostril of a sea turtle whilst it winces in pain and bleeds. Each year at least a million seabirds and hundreds of thousands of marine mammals slowly die when they entangle themselves or ingest plastic pollution.

Straws do not degrade. That means that every single plastic straw ever used still exists in some form today.  It is said that based on U.S consumption alone, there are enough straws that can wrap around the earth's circumference 2.5 times a day. Which is absurd, since straws are essentially useless. They are simply an item of convenience, an item that is now killing our marine life.

If we carry on like this, there will be more plastic in the sea than fish by 2050. We cannot let this happen. Plastic is found in the stomachs of Loggerhead Turtles, Seabirds and many species of UK-caught fish. And pieces that don't get eaten break down into microplastics, forming part of a dangerous plastic smog in our seas. A third of fish eaten in Britain today contains plastic. We are jeopardising our wildlife, our planet, and our own health.

It is obvious that our marine animals world wide are crying out for help. In the UK last year, some of our biggest supermarkets including, Tesco, Sainsburys, Asda and Morrisons, committed to end the sale of cotton buds with plastic stems along with Boots, Superdrug, Aldi and Lidl. Our voices were heard. Retailers are finally listening and we can win with straws. But we have to all work together - that means saying no to straws in coffee shops and fast food restaurants, and sharing this petition far and wide.

Retailers and fast food restaurants hold the power in their hands to prevent this from continuing. Let's put the pressure on and make them ditch the plastic!

Please sign, share and let's spread the message to make 2017 the year of #thelaststraw

Our voices must be heard - for the future of our planet. We've only got one

Sincerely,
Clare
