Demand U.S. Courts Recognize Emotional Abuse as Domestic Violence

The Issue

Emotional abuse is a pervasive issue that can have severe and lasting impacts on survivors. Unlike physical abuse, emotional abuse does not leave visible scars, but its damage is profound and real. With one in four women and one in nine men experiencing some form of intimate partner violence that includes emotional abuse, it's time for our legal system to take this insidious form of abuse seriously.

In many jurisdictions, emotional abuse is not given the legal recognition it merits. Survivors often find themselves without adequate legal protection or recourse because their abuse does not fit traditional definitions of violence. This lack of recognition means that perpetrators can continue to control and manipulate their victims without fear of repercussions.

Emotional abuse can include a range of behaviors, such as manipulation, isolation, intimidation, and verbal assaults. These actions erode a person's self-esteem, mental well-being, and autonomy. The psychological impact can be devastating, leading to anxiety, depression, PTSD, and even suicide.

We call on lawmakers to amend laws to provide comprehensive protection to survivors of emotional abuse. By including provisions specific to emotional abuse in domestic violence laws, we can ensure that survivors receive the justice they deserve. Law enforcement and the judiciary need the tools to recognize and respond to emotional abuse effectively.

Furthermore, public education campaigns must be initiated to raise awareness about the realities of emotional abuse, helping friends, family, and society at large to identify and support those affected.

We urge policymakers to listen to the voices of survivors and advocates and take swift action to close this gap in our legal system. Please sign this petition to demand legislative change that acknowledges emotional abuse and provides justice and protection for all survivors.
