To the Smash Bros. Melee Community and TSM Management,

Those of us who deeply cherish and have dedicated our lives to the Smash Bros. Melee community understand how vital mutual respect and compassion are to the health and spirit of competitive gaming. Unfortunately, one prominent member, William "Leffen" Hjelte, currently representing TSM, has consistently acted contrary to these values, causing significant harm within our community.

This issue is deeply personal and painful, as Leffen’s persistent harassment significantly impacted Aziz "Hax$" Al-Yami, a beloved member of our community. Hax$ dedicated nearly two decades of his life to Melee, tirelessly working to foster inclusivity and innovation within the game. After developing a debilitating hand condition, Hax$ collaborated with engineers to create an adaptive controller, aiming to make Smash Bros. Melee more accessible for players with disabilities. Rather than supporting this advancement, Leffen leveraged his significant influence and platform to slander Hax$ and his invention, ultimately leading tournament organizers to unjustly ban the controller from competitive play.

When Hax$ bravely spoke up against this harassment, detailing the years of bullying he endured, the community witnessed a distressing injustice. Instead of holding Leffen accountable for his destructive behavior, tournament organizers—swayed by Leffen’s influence—unfairly banned Hax$ globally. This isolation deeply affected Hax$, who spent years desperately pleading for acceptance and a second chance, even offering public apologies in hopes of returning to the community he considered family. Tragically, the ongoing ostracism led to Hax$ attempting suicide in the fall of 2024. He survived but suffered severe physical injuries, and ultimately, in March 2025, passed away at the young age of 30 due to complications from those injuries.

As stated poignantly by Hax$'s mother, his cause of death was fundamentally "a broken heart. He cried a lot toward the end, and most people didn't understand how much he loved being a gamer—it was his passion in life."

Leffen’s negative impact extends beyond this tragic loss, permeating multiple fighting game communities through ongoing bullying, harassment, and even maliciously falsified allegations against other players. His actions create an environment of anxiety, distrust, and emotional distress, undermining the foundational principles of respect, safety, and fair play that our community stands for.

We can no longer stand by as one individual’s behavior continues to harm others without accountability or consequence. It is imperative that TSM recognizes the gravity of these actions and removes Leffen from their roster, signaling that harassment, bullying, and toxicity have no place in esports.

We urge TSM management to act decisively. Join us in supporting a healthier, kinder, and safer gaming community. Your signature on this petition will affirm our collective commitment to protecting and preserving the integrity and compassion of our community.
