The Trump administration has invoked the Defense Production Act to ramp up domestic production of glyphosate — the active ingredient in Roundup — declaring it critical to national defense and food supply.

But glyphosate has been the subject of tens of thousands of lawsuits from people who allege it caused non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma. Scientific bodies have reached differing conclusions about its cancer risk. Meanwhile, Bayer has proposed a $7.25 billion settlement to resolve many of these claims, even as legal battles continue.

At a time when serious health concerns remain under debate — and with the Supreme Court set to weigh liability protections — expanding production under emergency powers sends the wrong message.

National security should not be used to fast-track chemical expansion while cancer lawsuits and scientific disputes are still unfolding.

We call on President Donald Trump to immediately rescind the executive order boosting glyphosate production and to halt any use of the Defense Production Act for herbicide manufacturing until an independent, updated scientific review is completed.

Public health must come first.
