Demand Transparency: What Is FEMA Doing in Texas?
The Issue
President Trump has repeatedly vowed to dismantle FEMA, the very agency tasked with coordinating federal disaster response. He’s called it “inefficient” and “bungling,” and under his administration, the agency has already lost some of its most experienced senior leaders. The acting director was pushed out in May, leaving serious questions about who’s in charge.
We believe FEMA is hugely important, but we also suspect it is under-resourced and mismanaged due to Trump administration recent cuts.
Now, after catastrophic floods in Texas, FEMA has reportedly been “activated”—but no one knows what that actually means.
“In a news release,” The New York Times reports, “the Department of Homeland Security, which oversees FEMA, said the agency had been ‘activated’ in Texas. But officials did not respond to questions about how many people had been deployed and what resources were on the ground.”
Texans are suffering, and the public deserves to know what kind of help is coming—if any. We can’t afford secrecy in a crisis.
Sign this petition to demand the Department of Homeland Security provide full transparency: What is FEMA doing in Texas? How many personnel are deployed? What aid is being delivered? Who is in charge?
If FEMA is being used, the public must be informed. If it isn’t—why not?
