The Issue

My beloved 2 year old  Mini Schnauzer Nuke nearly died after exposure to a toxic weed killer used by the council and private contractors in Hamilton. These dangerous chemicals are not only lethal to pets and wildlife, but they also pose a significant risk to our children playing in affected areas. It's alarming that such substances are deployed without adequate warning to residents.

In Hamilton, it is commonplace for these herbicides to be sprayed on communal land, yet there is no system in place to notify the public prior to their application. This lack of transparency means that residents cannot take measures to protect their families, pets, and local wildlife from exposure. A simple notification system, whether through online alerts or physical signs, could prevent unnecessary harm and anxiety.

The use of potentially hazardous chemicals, such as glyphosate-based herbicides, raises health concerns with studies linking them to various ailments in animals and potentially humans. In 2015, the World Health Organization classified glyphosate as "probably carcinogenic to humans," highlighting the urgent need for caution and transparency in its use.

Our wildlife, critical to maintaining ecological balance, is also under threat. Birds, insects, and other animals can be inadvertently poisoned or have their habitats destroyed by these chemicals. This endangers biodiversity and disrupts our local environment.

We call upon the Hamilton Council to implement a straightforward and effective notification system for all areas scheduled to be treated with herbicides, and to review the types of chemicals used, favoring less harmful alternatives. This is an essential step to protect our children, animals and the wildlife in the area.

Sign this petition if you agree that the council and contractors must be more transparent and prioritize public safety and environmental health. Together, we can make Hamilton a safer place for everyone.
