Demand transparency in EU food labeling for NGTs
The Issue
Demand Transparency and Labeling for All New Genomic Techniques (NGTs) in Our Food
I believe that honesty and transparency in food labeling are fundamental rights. We deserve to know how our food is produced so we can make fully informed choices for our families. However, the European Union's proposed framework for New Genomic Techniques (NGTs) threatens to reduce this visibility by exempting a large category of gene-edited foods from mandatory consumer labeling.
Under the current proposal, "Category 1" NGT crops—which regulators deem equivalent to conventional breeding—would not require a "GMO" or "NGT" label on grocery store shelves. While scientific bodies state these foods are safe, omitting this information deprives consumers of the right to choose between conventional, organic, and gene-edited products.
Why Transparency Matters?
Food labeling isn't just about safety; it is about consumer autonomy and trust.
Informed Consent:
For decades, European consumers have enjoyed clear labeling regarding genetically modified organisms (GMOs). Shifting away from this precedent for NGTs fragments the market and leaves consumers in the dark.
Market Clarity:
Families who wish to choose traditional or organic foods should be able to do so easily at a glance, without having to cross-reference complex online registries.
The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) emphasizes rigorous safety assessments, but technical safety should not replace democratic transparency. Consumers have a right to know the processes behind the food they buy, regardless of whether those processes are deemed equivalent to nature.
Our Call to Action
We urge the European Union to reconsider the labeling exemptions in the NGT regulation. We demand a system that mandates clear, accessible on-package labeling for all products derived from New Genomic Techniques.
Let’s ensure that our food system remains transparent, trusting, and respectful of a consumer's right to choose.
Sign this petition to demand full labeling transparency for all NGT products in the EU.
