The Issue

For years, the Federation of Italian-American Organizations of Brooklyn (FIAO) has been a cornerstone in our community in District 20, providing vital afterschool programs that enrich our children's educational experiences. Offering programs such as immersive dual language classes, FIAO has delivered irreplaceable services that benefit not only the students but also their families and our community as a whole.

It's with great concern that we have learned FIAO and other pivotal afterschool programs have not been accepted by the Department of Youth and Community Development (DYCD) for the upcoming year. This decision impacts numerous schools in District 20 and leaves families without crucial educational resources. Was this decision based on budget cuts, logistical issues, or a change in policy priorities?

We, the parents, community members, school staff, and afterschool program providers, demand transparency and clear communication from DYCD about the criteria and reasoning behind the selection process. Only with open communication can we ensure the best possible programs are available to serve and uplift our community's youth.

Sign this petition to urge DYCD to clarify their decision-making process and collaborate with us to reinstate these invaluable afterschool services. Together, we can ensure our children continue to receive the educational enrichment they deserve.
