Demand Transparency, Fairness, and Justice in the Anuradhapura Minor Abuse Case
The Issue
To the Attorney General’s Department, the Ministry of Justice, and the National Child Protection Authority (NCPA),
We, the concerned citizens of Sri Lanka and advocates for global human rights, are writing to demand absolute transparency, strict adherence to the rule of law, and unwavering justice regarding the ongoing legal proceedings in the Anuradhapura minor abuse case.
In May 2026, a senior Buddhist monk and the mother of an underage girl were arrested under grave allegations of long-term sexual abuse of a minor dating back to 2022. Following the arrest, widespread public concern arose when the primary suspect was permitted to spend his pretrial detention in a private hospital rather than a standard detention facility, citing health complications. On May 22, 2026, both suspects were released on bail by the Anuradhapura court.
While we respect the judicial process and the constitutional right to bail, the gravity of these charges involving a minor requires the highest level of scrutiny. In cases involving high-profile individuals or religious figures, it is vital that the public retains complete confidence in the impartiality of the justice system. There must be zero perception of special treatment, undue influence, or delays.
The protection of children is a fundamental duty of the state. When the system appears lenient or opaque, it discourages other victims of abuse from coming forward and undermines public trust in our legal institutions.
Our Demands:
- A Transparent and Fast-Tracked Trial: We call on the Attorney General’s Department to ensure that this case is prosecuted swiftly, transparently, and without any external, political, or institutional interference.
- Strict Oversight of Bail Conditions: We demand that the authorities strictly monitor the suspects while on bail to ensure there is absolutely no intimidation of the victim, witnesses, or tampering with evidence.
- Prioritizing Victim Protection: We urge the National Child Protection Authority (NCPA) to provide immediate, comprehensive psychological and physical protection for the underage victim throughout the duration of this trial.
- Equality Under the Law: We demand reassurance from the Ministry of Justice that the law applies equally to everyone, regardless of their social, financial, or religious standing.
We stand firmly against child abuse and demand that justice is not only done but is clearly seen to be done.
Please sign this petition to show that the public is watching and demanding accountability for our children.
