For the residents of Upper Marlboro, MD, safety has become a daily compromise. Our community cannot safely enter the traffic on the 301 State Highway nor can we return home without fear. The intersection at 301 Crain Highway and Governors Park Lane has been a consistent source of danger and distress for us all. This intersection is riddled with monthly accidents, causing not only property damage but also loss of life. It's a health hazard that puts every commuter on 301 southbound at risk.

We implore the State of Maryland along with Prince Georges County Council to approve an installation of a traffic light at this perilous intersection. A simple traffic light could drastically reduce these incidents and protect our community members from unnecessary harm.

The National Association of City Transportation Officials states that "traffic signals are used to control vehicle and pedestrian traffic by assigning priorities to various movement". By installing a signal here, we can ensure safer transitions onto and off the highway for all drivers.

Safety should never be compromised for convenience or cost-effectiveness. We urge our local authorities to take immediate action in protecting its citizens by installing this much-needed traffic light.
