Demand TikTok to Remove Content Creators Promoting Hate Speech
The Issue
For many, TikTok serves as an escape, an oasis of entertainment amidst life's daily challenges. Particularly for those already grappling with personal struggles, this platform provides a needed respite and source of comfort. However, some content creators frequently use their platforms to tear others down, corrupting this space with their negativity. The world already has enough of its own hardships; we certainly do not need influential voices encouraging more vile behaviour on such a powerful social media platform. I firmly believe that TikTok can enforce the moral and ethical responsibility to ensure that its platform promotes positivity and respect for human dignity. This would involve taking action against content creators who consistently propagate harmful behaviour.
For example content creators "Evil Queen", also known as Chelsey Harwood, has made a habit of mocking abuse, child abuse, race, and mental health issues. Daniel Sloan also known as ”Diadro” scamming followers and admitting to being around underage girls and other content creators urinating on pictures of deceased children, all without any repercussions from TikTok's management.
The heart of the problem lies in TikTok's policy or lack thereof, which allows such harmful behaviour to continue, seemingly because of a profit-driven agenda. This issue raises an important question: should income be prioritized over morality? The answer should be a resounding no. Content creators have a powerful platform to spread positivity, inspiration, and important messages. Why then, should those who spread hate and fear be allowed to continue using the platform?
Based on a study by the Pew Research Center, 41% of TikTok users are aged between 16 and 24, a demography that is highly impressionable and vulnerable to the impact of negative content (Pew Research Centre, 2020).
As reported by the Anti-Defamation League, there has been an alarming increase in hate speech on TikTok. From racist videos to those ridiculing mental health challenges, these toxic narratives damage individuals and communities and create a negative online environment. It is essential that TikTok takes proactive steps in eliminating these content creators.
I urge TikTok to place the mental well-being of its users above financial considerations. The users' welfare should not play second fiddle to the monetary gains from high follower counts and controversial content.
We ask that TikTok commit to an ethical stance and hold all content creators accountable for their actions. It is time for TikTok to prioritize user safety and mental well-being over profits. Please join me in sending a strong message to TikTok to act on hate speech and harmful content. Sign this petition and make your voice heard.
