Overview

TikTok has become one of Canada's most influential social media platforms, providing a space for creativity, community engagement, and digital entrepreneurship. However, unlike creators in the United States, United Kingdom, and other supported regions, Canadian TikTok creators do not receive financial compensation through a Creator Fund. This lack of funding puts Canadian creators at a significant disadvantage despite contributing to TikTok’s global success.

We, the undersigned, demand that TikTok establish a Canadian Creator Fund to ensure that Canadian content creators receive fair and equitable compensation for their contributions.

Why This Matters

1. TikTok Profits from Canadian Content Without Giving Back

• TikTok generates revenue from Canadian users and content but does not reinvest in its creator community.

2. U.S. and Other Countries Receive Payments, Why Not Canada?

• The U.S., UK, France, Germany, and several other countries already have a TikTok Creator Fund. Canada is unfairly excluded.

3. A Creator Fund Supports Canadian Culture and Economy

• Canadian creators contribute to national and global digital culture. A Creator Fund would allow them to reinvest in better content, grow their audiences, and create sustainable careers.

4. This Impacts the Future of the Canadian Creator Economy

• Without financial incentives, many Canadian creators are forced to seek opportunities in the U.S. or rely solely on brand deals. A Creator Fund would provide a reliable income stream, fostering long-term growth for Canada’s digital creators.

 

Our Demands

We call on TikTok Canada and TikTok Global Leadership to:

1. Establish a Canadian Creator Fund similar to those in the U.S. and Europe.

2. Provide transparent eligibility criteria for Canadian creators to apply.

3. Work with Canadian content creators to develop fair compensation models.

4. Publicly acknowledge the need for fair funding for Canadian digital creators.

Additionally, we urge the Government of Canada to:

1. Advocate for fair digital economy practices and hold platforms accountable for compensating Canadian creators.

2. Support independent digital creators through grants, tax benefits, or funding initiatives similar to those available for film and TV.
