We, the undersigned, call on the United States Senate to launch an immediate investigation into the dangerous and false claims made by Senator J.D. Vance. His perpetuation of known fabrications about immigrants in Springfield, Ohio, have directly contributed to a surge in threats of violence and unrest in the area. This behavior constitutes a severe breach of public trust and endangers the safety of Ohioans. We demand the Senate Ethics Committee review these actions and take appropriate steps, including expulsion, if warranted, to hold Senator Vance accountable.

Ohio is our home, and it is deeply concerning that a leader we entrusted with our state’s wellbeing has openly admitted his willingness to fabricate dangerous misinformation.

Recently, on CNN, Senator JD Vance confessed his willingness to create false narratives, stating:

“If I have to create stories so that the American media actually pays attention to the suffering of the American people, then that’s what I’m going to do.”

Vance has spread unsubstantiated rumors about immigrants in his home state of Ohio—rumors that Donald Trump perpetuated during the presidential debate. As a result, hospitals, elementary and middle schools, and universities in the area have experienced threats of violence, leading to closures and evacuations.

This reckless behavior puts Ohioans in harm’s way and is unacceptable for someone in his position of power. 

Since Senator Vance’s false story took hold, we’ve seen an alarming increase in fear, harassment, and threats, directly following these fabricated claims.

We must not tolerate leaders who prioritize personal gain over public safety. Therefore, we call for Senator JD Vance’s immediate resignation, and at minimum an investigation by the Senate Select Committee on Ethics.

This act of accountability will send a powerful message: 

We, as Ohioans, and Americans, value honesty, safety, and community above all else. It’s time to uphold the principles our beloved state, and nation deserves. And the United States Senate, will not tolerate conduct unbecoming of a Senator. This is a testament to the broader impact of harmful misinformation, and that no Senator shall carelessly place their constituents in harms way, without being held accountable.
