We've all learned that social media can stoke violence in our country. We only have to look at the attack on the Capitol on January 6th to understand the important role platforms such as Twitter, now X, can play in sowing hate. The United States government should see the threat as a serious one that must be addressed immediately, before tragedy happens.

The Washington Post reports "Since Oct. 7, antisemitic content has surged more than 900 percent on X and there have been more than 1,000 incidents of real-world antisemitic attacks, vandalism and harassment in America, according to the Anti-Defamation League — the highest number since the human rights group started counting. (That includes about 200 rallies the group deemed to be at least implicitly supporting Hamas.)"

Just as Congress has called in Facebook and others to testify about their influence on society, so now must our U.S. Senators call Elon Musk in to testify and demand he account for the hate he spreads on X. Senators must inform him that if he doesn't self-regulate, they will be forced to intervene in his business.

Demand your U.S. Senator hold Musk accountable for dangerous content on X, and not be passive in the face of dangerous social media. The Senate must uphold the expectation of safe, civil discourse that protects all people.
