I am a resident living in trepidation of an escalating rat infestation in our quiet town of Mt. Tabor, VT. The epicenter of this plague is a collapsed and condemned house on Brooklyn Rd, directly across from my home. The dilapidated structure is not simply an eyesore but a hazardous breeding ground for these rodents. As a consequence, the rats have started invading my home and those of my neighbors, carrying a whole host of diseases.

Rats are known vectors of serious illnesses such as leptospirosis, hantavirus, and rat-bite fever (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention). The town's inaction is not only disturbing our peace but also putting our collective health at serious risk. These health risks are for both human and animals/pets.

We want to remind everyone that this is not a "new" problem. This has been going on for well over 10 years. The town has done absolutely nothing to fix the quality of life for all of it's residents. The filth and debris is a breeding ground for disease. 

We urgently suggest the town's responsible departments to take decisive action. This should involve safely demolishing the collapsed house on Brooklyn Rd and initiating a thorough rodent control program to combat the rampant rat population.
