Illinois Parents and Domestic Violence Survivors Demand Accountability

To the Illinois State Board of Education and the appropriate state authorities:

We are calling for Dr. Tony Sanders to resign as Illinois State Superintendent of Education — or for the appropriate authorities to take action to remove him from his position.

Parents and communities have repeatedly reached out for help regarding serious concerns affecting children and families.

Among those concerns are complaints involving domestic violence and allegations of domestic abuse involving individuals connected to Illinois public education.

And victims say they have reached out.

They have spoken.

They have reported.

They have asked for help.

Yet they continue to feel ignored.

SILENCE HAS CONSEQUENCES.

When a victim reports domestic violence to a government official or agency responsible for overseeing public education, that report should not disappear into silence.

When parents raise concerns about the safety of children who may be connected to an alleged abuser, those concerns deserve to be taken seriously.

When survivors repeatedly seek assistance and receive no meaningful response, we have the right to ask who is accountable.

WE ARE ASKING DR. TONY SANDERS:

What happened to the complaints received from victims?

Were they reviewed?

Were they investigated or referred to the appropriate authorities?

Were the victims given a meaningful response?

Were children’s safety and school environments considered?

What action, if any, did ISBE take?

And if complaints were received and no meaningful action followed:

WHY?

Remaining silent in the face of repeated domestic-violence complaints can create the appearance that the institution is willing to tolerate, minimize, or protect against accountability for alleged abusers.

We are demanding answers.

We are not asking ISBE to prejudge criminal allegations or deny anyone due process.

We are demanding that victims be heard, complaints be properly handled, and public officials be accountable for how they respond.

THIS IS ABOUT MORE THAN ONE PERSON.

This is about what Illinois tells every survivor who finds the courage to speak.

Will someone listen?

Will someone investigate?

Will someone protect children?

Will someone take the complaint seriously?

Or will victims be left wondering whether the system is more concerned with protecting institutions and employees than protecting families?

WE SAY: NO MORE SILENCE.

Parents and survivors deserve a State Superintendent who takes their concerns seriously.

Children deserve safe educational environments.

Victims deserve meaningful responses.

Communities deserve transparency.

And public officials must be accountable for how they respond when serious allegations are brought to their attention.

OUR DEMAND IS CLEAR:

DR. TONY SANDERS SHOULD RESIGN.

If he refuses to resign, we are asking the appropriate authorities to initiate the lawful process necessary to remove him from office.

We are also demanding:

A review of complaints submitted to ISBE involving domestic violence and alleged domestic abuse.

Transparency regarding how those complaints were handled.
Accountability for failures to respond to victims and parents.

Clear procedures for protecting children when allegations involving domestic violence intersect with public education.

Meaningful communication with victims and families who seek assistance.

Independent review when appropriate to determine whether complaints were properly handled.

WE WILL NOT BE SILENT FOR VICTIMS WHO HAVE ALREADY FOUND THEIR VOICES.

If you believe victims deserve to be heard…

If you believe children deserve protection…

If you believe parents deserve answers…

If you believe government officials must be accountable for how they respond to serious complaints…

SIGN THIS PETITION.

SIGN. SHARE. SPEAK UP.

Because silence should never be mistaken for accountability.

Illinois families deserve better.
