The Issue

K-9 Chilli dedicated her life to protecting the people of Pitt County. On June 11, 2026, that service ended in tragedy when Chilli died after being left in a Sheriff's Office vehicle for several hours. According to the Pitt County Sheriff's Office's own public statement, Chilli's handler returned from training shortly after noon and "simply forgot" Chilli was in the vehicle until a critical time had passed.

This tragic oversight not only resulted in the heartbreaking loss of Chilli but also points to a severe lapse in responsibility and accountability within the Sheriff's Office. For a trusted law enforcement agency, such a negligent act is inexcusable and undermines community trust.

Sheriff Paula Dance is ultimately accountable for the policies and practices within her department. The death of K-9 Chilli calls for a thorough re-evaluation of the leadership and policies in place that allowed such negligence to occur. We must demand immediate change to prevent further tragedies.

By demanding Sheriff Paula Dance's resignation, we send a clear message that the lives of K-9 officers matter, and we expect accountability from those in leadership. This stance is not only about justice for Chilli but also about ensuring the safety and well-being of all service animals in the future.

We urge you to join us in calling for Sheriff Dance's resignation to restore faith in our local law enforcement and honor the memory of K-9 Chilli. Please sign this petition and stand with us in this crucial cause.
