For too long, our courts have been more worried about protecting careers and businesses than protecting our most vulnerable victims - animals.  This became personal when Judge Paul Mabey KC of New Zealand chose to overlook the ill-treatment of four horses, including a brutal act where one horse was kicked twice in the genitals. The offender, a North Island horse trainer, was allowed to avoid conviction and even keep his name permanently secret, despite the clear violation of the Animal Welfare Act 1999 which stipulates a 12 month prison sentence or a $50,000 fine for such offenses. This blatant misuse of power not only enables these heinous acts but also protects the offender from facing any consequences. And, as long as Judges like Mabey continue to occupy the bench, there is little hope that people who engage in animal cruelty will be deterred. This is not just about one case or one judge; it's about a system that places privilege over justice, and we refuse to stand by and let this continue. We call upon the relevant authorities to thoroughly investigate this case, ensure justice for the abused animals, and demand the immediate resignation of Judge Paul Mabey.
