Demand the resignation of Daniel Hampsey, Dunoon Cllr after defection to ReformUK
The Issue
I am writing to express my disgust over the recent defection of Councillor Daniel Hampsey, who now represents Reform UK for the Dunoon Ward. As someone whose personal values do not align with those of Reform UK, I feel it’s crucial to address a larger issue at hand – the democratic legitimacy of Councillor Hampsey’s current position.
Councillor Hampsey was elected as an individual representing his original party, not as an individual full stop.
Conservatives are jumping a sinking ship and aligning with the growing “popularity” of Reform UK. However, with his switch to Reform, there was no public confirmation or consultation over this change, leaving the democratic legitimacy of his position untenable.
Reform UK’s views do not represent the majority of Dunoon residents. In fact, this political shift undermines the very foundation of trust and expectation that the public placed in Councillor Hampsey when he was elected. Public servants are supposed to represent the will and the needs of their constituency, and it’s clear that this defection is not in accordance with that principle - it is self serving, attempting to cling to some form of political career after the demise of the Tories.
In light of these circumstances, I urge the public who are as disgusted as I am - and the Council to intervene and call for the immediate resignation or removal of Councillor Daniel Hampsey from his position. Alternatively, we demand a by-election at the earliest possible opportunity to ensure that the residents of Dunoon are accurately and fairly represented in their local government.
The democratic process is built on trust, representation, and accountability. By allowing this self preserving stunt to continue unchallenged, we pave the way for a precedent that disregards these pillars of our society, and allows the jumping between the “popular” team in current politics. Let us collectively send a message that political representation is not a personal endeavour but a public duty that requires understanding of the values and consent of the electorate.
If you can, please sign this petition to uphold the democratic integrity of the Dunoon Ward and ensure that our voices are heard loudly, Dunoon is not Reform, Reform does not speak for us.
