I am a resident of Medicine Hat, AB, Canada and this issue is deeply personal to me. Recently, Councilor Shila Sharps made light of suicide - an issue that has tragically affected my life. Mental health is not a joke; it's a serious matter that deserves respect and understanding.

Councilor Sharps' comments are just the latest in a pattern of disrespect towards the citizens she is supposed to represent. Her actions are not only insensitive but also unworthy of her position as council member. We need leaders who will treat all citizens with dignity and respect, especially when discussing sensitive issues like mental health.

In Canada, approximately 4,000 people die by suicide each year (source: Canadian Mental Health Association). Each one leaves behind loved ones who must cope with their loss. Making light of such a serious issue shows an alarming lack of empathy and understanding from someone in such an influential position.
