The Issue

We, the deeply concerned citizens of South Dakota, along with families and friends personally affected, are distressed by the current situation in our state prisons. It has become increasingly apparent that Kellie Wasko and Amber Pirraglia, serving as security of department of corrections and acting warden of Sioux Falls prison respectively, have failed to implement any effective rehabilitation programs. Our prisons lack teachers and online EDC class being offered, jobs are scant, and the communication process with our loved one has been made harder due to changes in the calling system. Recently, the instant messaging system which had just undergone updates has been withdrawn. Along with multiple lockdowns without offering video visits.

Adding to the distress is the blatant disregard for human rights. There have been reports of inhumane treatment and acts which can only be described as cruel and unusual punishmnent. This unacceptable state of affairs runs against the principles of justice and rehabilitation which prisons are meant to uphold.

The prisons' inability to effectively utilize rehabilitation tools such as the PEARL program greatly hinders the possibility of successful rehabilitation for the inmates. Thus, this situation is a betrayal of the public trust and goes against the core values that the South Dakota Department of Corrections claims to uphold. It is time to hold those in power accountable.

We appeal to all concerned citizens to join us in calling for the immediate removal of Kellie Wasko and Amber Pirraglia from their positions. Their inability to bring about positive change and improve conditions proves they are ill-fit for their roles. By signing this petition, we express our collective voice for reform and the reinstatement of justice in South Dakota's prisons. Also multiple problems with Union supply commentary and issues with meals being served erratically and never consistent. Please sign our petition today.
