Demand the Release of Pavel Durov from Unjust Detention
Проблема
As regular users of Telegram, we strongly believe that this private messaging platform has become a crucial public square for open, unfiltered discussion in the increasingly-censorious, global digital space. Pavel Durov, the founder of Telegram, stands as a beacon of this freedom. Unfortunately, he is now being put in danger of imprisonment merely for refusing to introduce censorship on his platform.
Pavel Durov, affectionately known as Pasha, has become symbolic in our fight against oppression. His refusal to bend to governmental pressure exemplifies what a true respect for freedom of speech looks like. Ironically, instead of being applauded, he is being punished by the French government – an entity that is supposed to be a pillar for such freedoms.
It's disturbing that many governments across the world are punishing the champions of free speech. Instead of incarcerating individuals like Pavel, they should be dialoguing with them - discussing ways of maintaining a balance between national security and the rights of citizens to free speech. Such draconian measures being adopted by the French government will only stifle innovation and breed fear among digital rights defenders.
Moreover, the implications of Pavel's imprisonment go beyond just him. If we allow this to happen, then it means anyone at any time can become the next target. And without brave developers like Pavel, diverse platforms like Telegram may eventually succumb to government censorship. Undesirable channels could be blocked, correspondences and calls could be monitored, and our cherished freedoms will be eroded gradually.
In essence, what's currently happening to Pavel represents a much larger problem - the systematic suppression of free speech online. Hence, by signing this petition, you're not just supporting Pavel; you're fighting for everyone's right to freely express themselves on the internet. Stand with us. Demand Pavel's immediate release. #FreeDurov.
