The Issue

Justice for the Victims. Accountability for the Perpetrator.

We, the undersigned, demand that the court impose the maximum sentence permitted by law in the case of Thomas Martel.

According to publicly reported information, this monster pleaded guilty to acts involving the prolonged torture and killing of multiple cats. These were not isolated acts or momentary lapses in judgment. They were repeated acts of deliberate cruelty against defenseless living beings that were capable of feeling fear, pain, and suffering.

These animals were not property.

They were sentient lives.

The unimaginable suffering they endured deserves to be recognized for what it was: extreme violence against vulnerable living beings.

Far too often, crimes against animals are minimized. We reject the notion that deliberate torture of animals should be met with leniency simply because the victims were not human. A society that values compassion and justice must recognize that intentional cruelty of this magnitude demands the most serious consequences the law allows.

We Demand:

  • The maximum custodial sentence permitted under Illinois law.
  • A lifetime prohibition on owning, possessing, fostering, or having custody of any animal, to the fullest extent permitted by law.
  • Mandatory psychological evaluation and treatment as ordered by the court.
  • Any additional lawful conditions necessary to protect animals and the public from future harm.

Why This Matters

Animal torture is not a harmless act. It is intentional violence inflicted on defenseless victims who experience terror, pain, and suffering just as any sentient being does.

When someone repeatedly inflicts extreme cruelty on animals, the harm extends far beyond the individual victims. It traumatizes rescuers, devastates adopters, burdens shelters, and leaves communities fearing for the safety of their animals.

The justice system must send an unmistakable message that deliberate torture of animals is a grave offense deserving of the strongest lawful response.

The lives of these cats mattered.

Their suffering mattered.

Their deaths mattered.

Justice demands accountability.

Sign this petition to demand the maximum sentence permitted by law and to stand for those who had no voice.
