Demand the Kennett Square YMCA Open its Pool to the Community or Give It Back.

The Issue

We, the undersigned, are deeply concerned about the Kennett Square YMCA's recent decision to keep its outdoor pool closed to the community this summer. For decades, the pool has been a beloved resource for families in the borough, offering summer memberships and day passes for all to enjoy. However, the YMCA has decided to use the pool only for their private camps and swim team, shutting out taxpayers who own the pool and subsidize it for $1/year.

We believe that the decision to close the pool to the community is unacceptable, especially given the social and emotional benefits that outdoor activities and pools provide for young children and their families. It is also troubling that the YMCA is choosing not to return the benefit of this key borough resource to all stakeholders in the community.

We understand that the YMCA has cited concerns about the pool being in a flood plain and difficulty finding lifeguards. However, these issues have not prevented other pools in the area from opening, and the YMCA has not provided any factual membership data to support its claim that membership had been declining prior to COVID.

Therefore, we demand that the Kennett Square YMCA either open its pool to the community this summer or turn the pool back over to the Kennett Square Borough so it can once again serve the community that owns it. It is time for the YMCA to honor the spirit of its lease agreement with the borough and keep this valuable resource accessible to all.

Please sign this petition to show your support for opening the pool to the community and share it with your friends and family. Together, we can make a difference for the betterment of the community and the kids in the area.

Thank you for your support.

Sincerely,

Mike Cangi and concerned community members.
