Muhammed Afzal, former Lord Mayor of Birmingham, has recently been stripped of his honorary alderman title after being found to have lied under oath to an election court. His deceit was exposed when doorbell footage showed him and his supporters distributing gifts of dates with Labour Party stickers to voters — an act considered electoral bribery under the law.

Despite clear evidence of dishonesty, and a judge’s condemnation of his actions, Muhammed Afzal remains in a powerful leadership position as Chairman of Birmingham Central Mosque.

Why This Matters:

Community leadership demands the highest standards of honesty, integrity, and trust. Muhammed Afzal’s deliberate lies in a court of law — and his attempt to wrongly discredit political opponents — have permanently damaged his credibility.

If someone who has been proven to lie for political gain continues to lead one of the city’s most important religious and community institutions, it sends the wrong message: that integrity doesn’t matter.

The Birmingham Central Mosque and its community deserve better. We deserve leadership we can trust.
