Demand the Episcopal Bishop to Apologize or Resign for Mixing Politics with Religion
The Issue
I am deeply concerned about the recent sermon delivered by our current Episcopal Bishop, where she mixed religion with political commentary. This has led to divisions within our religious community, because some of us believe that religion and politics need to be kept separate, and each should have its own time and place.
It's essential to remember that religion's primary role is to guide its followers spiritually. However, the leader of our blooming Episcopal community decided to use her sermon, a platform meant for fostering spiritual development, to make political statements. This act has left many of us feeling uncomfortable and alienated, and we believe that this is unacceptable.
Across the globe, many religious institutions adhere strictly to the principle of separation of church and state. A 2010 Pew Research Center survey found that nearly two-thirds of Americans say that churches and other houses of worship should keep out of political matters (source: Pew Research Center, 2010). It's evidence that the majority want to maintain the sanctity and spiritual focus of religious spaces.
With this petition, we request the Episcopal Bishop to recognize the discomfort and dismay her recent sermon has caused among numerous devotees. We ask that she either offer a sincere apology and make a commitment to separate religion and politics in her future sermons, or she should consider resigning.
This is a call to all fellow congregants who believe in the preservation of the purity and peace our religious space offers, away from political noise and influence. Lend your support to this matter and sign the petition.
