Demand that TSDB Vote Against Cuts That Sacrifice Students

Demand that TSDB Vote Against Cuts That Sacrifice Students
The Issue
We the undersigned demand that TDSB vote NO to a budget that sacrifices students and YES to keeping programs and commitments that allow students to be successful in a safe environment.
This Wednesday June 18, TDSB trustees are voting on what programs and resources will be cut to a school board that is already barely meeting student and staff needs.
A recent TDSB report showed that there has been a 67% increase in violent incidents in its schools. Over the past 5 years, the TDSB has cut almost 10% of its Elementary Teachers. There are now fewer teachers and support staff to supervise, safely manage behaviour and teach our children.
Alarmingly, the TDSB is considering a full 25% increase in the number of students in our Diagnostic Kindergarten classes. The 4 and 5 year old children in Diagnostic Kindergartens require intensive support. They struggle to communicate and to self-regulate. They easily become overstimulated by noise, lights, other students, and change. As a result, they will hit, push, scratch, run away, climb furniture and throw chairs. At the current cap, DK staff across the TDSB struggle to keep these students and themselves safe.
Resources that keep children safe and provide access to a complete education have been eroded. TDSB should be opening more Diagnostic Kindergarten classes at the current ratio to meet student needs, not add more students to the existing classes. 99% of the students in Diagnostic Kindergarten have a diagnosis of Autism. Under Ministry guidelines for a class with students with Autism, DK ratios should actually be decreasing.
We the undersigned demand that TDSB vote NO to a budget that sacrifices students and YES to keeping programing and commitments that give every child an opportunity for a safe, and successful education.
