The Issue

When disabled the immediate access to medical equipment can be life or death situation, or at least to prevent the deterioration of the quality of life for the disabled individual in need of the equipment. A disabled individual’s body can NOT wait for medical necessity forms or any other red tape to come in their way, or they may become sicker and even die from the stresses on the individual’s body. After breakdown of a disabled individual’s body occurs, it becomes unlikely to get that individual back to their previous health which wasn’t that great in the first place. This permanently lowers the quality of life for this disabled person and creates another medical issue to care for, costing this person and/or insurance (even taxpaid Medicaid) more money in the long run due to increased need of medical attention like hospitals, doctors and even home health nurses. (Costing taxpayers millions).

We are demanding that when a person is deemed as disabled, then the insurance company must provide the appropriate medical equipment ordered by a doctor right away, then afterwards the disabled individual may show why they are in need of this equipment. If it is found that the individual fraudulently acquired the equipment then appropriate compensation for the insurance company can be issued. This is important because a “true disabled” individual can NOT wait but a insurance company can. The rights of the disabled human always trumps the rights of the insurance company no matter the situation.

Did you know?

That Medicaid will not pay for many prevention equipment such as an air cushion for a wheelchair UNTIL the person gets the preventable medical issue like a bed sore. 1 ER visit costs more then this seat (ROHO cushion) and the subsequent medical attention can cost hundreds of thousands when a $500 cushion would’ve prevented it. They expect a medical necessity form for these which can take weeks, but a sore develops within 2 hours. So until a seat is acquired, this disabled individual must rely on family to care for them all day as they stay bed ridden, or get up into their chair risking adverse health issues. This burdens family members if they have any to care for them. If not these disabled persons cannot care for themselves. Eventually these individuals die from lack of care because infections and all sorts of health consequences attack their fragile bodies.
This is just one of many instances that show the ignorance of those in charge of trying to “save” money by denying services and equipment to a disabled persons through their insurances. It’s a way they think it will save them money but that’s only for the immediate moment in time.  After the person’s body begins to deteriorate, the money they saved is quickly overwhelmed by the cost of care associated with the lack of medical devices, services and supplies.
