Demand that Louisiana Lawmakers Ban Cruel Gestation Crates for Pigs

The Issue

In more than 10 states across the country, laws now ban or restrict the use of cruel gestation crates—tiny metal cages that confine pregnant pigs so tightly they cannot turn around or lie down comfortably for months on end. But here in Louisiana, this extreme confinement is still legal.

That needs to change.

These animals—highly intelligent and deeply social—suffer immensely in these crates, both physically and psychologically.

States like Ohio, Florida, and Arizona—some of which have large farming sectors just like Louisiana—have already passed bipartisan legislation phasing out these inhumane systems. And it hasn’t destroyed their pork industries. In fact, farmers, scientists, and veterinarians have worked together to develop more humane, sustainable housing systems that protect animal welfare without burdening local agriculture.

We call on Governor Jeff Landry and the Louisiana State Legislature to follow this proven path and pass legislation banning the use of gestation crates in our state.

This isn’t a partisan issue. It’s about basic decency, modern standards, and our shared responsibility to treat animals with care. By passing crate-free laws, Louisiana can join the growing list of states that value compassion and science over cruelty and outdated practices.

Add your name to demand humane treatment for farm animals in Louisiana. Let’s bring our laws in line with our values.
