Demand that Danielle Smith stop the transfer of Alberta hospitals to private third-parties
The Issue
As an Albertan, I deeply value equal access to healthcare for every citizen, regardless of their location, religion, sexuality, income, race, or gender. The recent decision by our provincial government to transfer the control of certain hospitals to private entities threatens these values.
From CTV News: "At a UCP town hall event in Drayton Valley, Premier Danielle Smith revealed the next phases of her government’s restructuring of health care in Alberta, including plans to remove Alberta Health Services (AHS) as the operator of some hospitals and turn facilities over to other operators like Catholic health care provider Covenant Health."
Covenant Health, a catholic organization, restricts its staff from providing a range of necessary medical procedures, including emergency contraceptives, abortion, medical assistance in dying, gender affirming care, among others. This transition will create significant gaps in treatment and broaden systematic biases against those who require these critical services.
In 2019, more than 44% of Canadians lived in rural areas, and this statistic will only grow with time. As our rural population increases, so too does the need for comprehensive and unbiased healthcare services. The privatization of hospitals is a direct assault on the accessibility and quality of healthcare services these Albertans are entitled to. Additionally, these changes will cost the taxpayers more money due to duplication of administrative roles, while destabilizing our existing healthcare system across the province as a result of reduced AHS budgets.
Transferring hospital management to private corporations sets a dangerous precedent for the privatization of healthcare in Alberta while lining the pockets of well-known conservatives across the province. Tyler Shandro, former Cabinet Minister in the Government of Alberta, is on the Board of Directors for Covenant Health.
We demand Danielle Smith and the Alberta UCP to reconsider the decision of transferring the management of Alberta hospitals to private third parties. We also demand a thorough and nonpartisan ethics investigation into the Government of Alberta's relationship with private third-party healthcare providers, including but not limited to Covenant Health.
The Government of Alberta has a responsibility to prioritize the health and wellbeing of all Albertans over profitability and ensure that our hospitals remain under public control, providing equitable access to all forms of medical care.
