Good afternoon, friends:
Since we launched this petition five days ago calling on Senate Democrats to replace Sen. Chuck Schumer as their leader, more than 32,000 people have signed.
And it continues to grow.
The petition has been featured in Newsweek, POLITICO (twice, in fact), and The Hill, among other major outlets.
Mr. Schumer postponed his book tour events scheduled for this week for "security concerns" when he learned there would be in-person protests by Democrats upset with him for caving to Trump and Elon Musk.
He's now engaged in an aggressive media tour in more friendly environments (he hopes), including an appearance on The View today, where the incredulous hosts substantially pushed back on his reversal, including this statement from Sunny Hostin:
“It gives me no pleasure to say this to you, because we are friends, but I think you caved. I think you and nine other Democrats caved. I don’t think you showed the fight that this party needs right now, because you’re playing by a rulebook where the other party has thrown that rulebook away.”
The momentum calling on Mr. Schumer to step down continues to build, and it's critical that we reach out to our friends, family, neighbors, and fellow Democrats and ask them to join this effort.
I understand many of our fellow Democrats feel uneasy over this, and I don't blame them one bit. I would rather not be here, either, but until we have a change in leadership and a clear plan, it will be significantly more difficult, if not impossible, to strengthen our party and save democracy.
For those wondering how to talk to the folks in their life about this, I wrote up a more detailed explanation of my reasoning and why I truly feel this is a critical fork in the road. You can read that here.
Things you can do to make this a success:
1. Ask those in your life to sign this petition.
2. Call and email Democratic Senators and make it clear we need a change in leadership. (Information here.)
3. Continue to support Democrats at every level, especially those who are speaking out forcefully against Trump and Elon Musk.
I am a proud Democrat. We don't need a new party. We need new leadership who will fight back and refuse to give up leverage for false commitments and bad faith actions by Trump and Elon Musk.
Thank you all for being part of this effort. Let's do what needs to be done to save our democracy.
Warmly,
Charlotte
