Growing up as a dedicated Aston Villa fan has been one of the biggest joys of my life. Since the early 1970s, I have celebrated every victory with immense pride. Aston Villa is more than a football club to me; it represents community, honour, and a way of life. Therefore, it is with deep sorrow that I view the recent decision by the club to enter into a sponsorship deal with Visit Rwanda.

The alliance with Visit Rwanda raises serious ethical concerns due to accusations against the Rwandan government related to human rights abuses, including reports of murder, assault, and torture of political opponents. Also, its reported interference in conflicts involving neighbouring states.  For a club of Aston Villa's stature to associate with such an entity undermines the principles and values that the club has historically stood for. This sponsorship is a blatant example of "sportswashing," effectively providing a platform to obscure the human rights violations perpetuated by an oppressive regime.

Football clubs have a responsibility to their fans and the global community to uphold ethical standards and increase awareness about global issues, rather than ignore them. The partnership with Visit Rwanda will severely damage the club’s reputation. Many supporters, like myself, feel morally compromised and disheartened by this decision.

We urge the management and stakeholders of Aston Villa FC to reconsider this sponsorship. We propose that the club aligns itself with sponsors that reflect the fans' values and the club’s proud heritage. Ethical sponsorships not only protect the club’s reputation but also foster trust and loyalty among its fanbase.

By cancelling the Visit Rwanda sponsorship, Aston Villa FC can send a powerful message to the world: we stand against oppression and in support of human rights.
