The Issue

The Texas State Board of Education just approved new social studies standards that treat Islam very differently than other religions. Starting in the 2030 school year, every Texas high schooler will be taught that "radical Islam" motivated the 9/11 attacks, and lessons will describe the Prophet Muhammad's military campaigns as "brutal." Meanwhile, the same standards highlight Christianity's positive influence on Western society. The board even removed an earlier proposal that would have taught students about Muslim contributions to algebra and astronomy.

Board member Brandon Hall defended keeping the harsh language, saying removing it "would be a grave mistake." But Muslim speakers, including Bahia Amawi, asked the board to hold Islam "to the same standard as other religions" and to stop teaching students to see their Muslim classmates with suspicion.

Rachel Laser, president of Americans United for Separation of Church and State, put it plainly: "The board should not be imposing a curriculum on students that favors one faith and disparages another."

This isn't about erasing hard history. It's about teaching it honestly and fairly, for every religion, not singling one out for suspicion while giving another a pass. Texas classrooms should build understanding between neighbors, not plant distrust before students even meet each other.

The Texas State Board of Education can still revise these standards before they take effect. Sign the petition demanding they fix this biased curriculum now, before an entire generation of Texas students grows up learning it.
