Like many of you, I was shocked and appalled to discover the recent revelation of massive fraud within the United States Agency for International Development (USAID). Billions of our hard-earned taxpayer dollars have been unwisely delegated to NGOs, terrorist organizations, and even funneled as kickbacks to politicians. This is not only a gross misuse of our money, but a complete violation of our trust.

The Government Accountability Office (GAO) has continuously spotlighted issues with USAID's financial reporting and internal controls over the years. A GAO report in 2014 found that USAID had "significant internal control weaknesses that affect the safeguarding of assets, proper use of funds, and compliance with laws and regulations." Unfortunately, these warnings were left ignored, leading to the devastating discovery of fraud we are grappling with today.

Every American who has ever paid their taxes diligently and honestly deserves compensation from the government for this misuse of their contribution. It is high time that we are held accountable not just as taxpayers, but also as recipients of the credible use of our taxes.
