As someone personally affected by environmental contamination, I understand the gravity of this situation. We must advocate for cleaner environments and better oversight.

For over 100 years, the Lehigh Cement Plant bordering Cupertino has been causing extensive environmental contamination that harms both residents and wildlife. Santa Clara County now plans to utilize this property for onsite housing without adequately addressing its hazardous past. The site has a Periodic table alphabet soup of hazardous waste from Mercury, Chromium, Selenium, Magnesium, bomb making, aluminum foil manufacturing, and also having multiple explosions resulting in deaths, all making our run of the mill Superfund chip fabs look like cupcake shops in comparison. This site needs consideration because the County wants to put housing on it. The site must be cleaned up first via the Superfund cleanup process. We deserve this, our future residents deserve this.

We demand that the City of Cupertino and Santa Clara County request a consideration of National Priorities Listing (NPL) “Superfund” for this plant. An NPL Superfund listing is crucial as it paves the way to cleaning up sites like these, providing safer environments for our future generations while ensuring appropriate oversight over past hazardous uses.

The health risks associated with such contaminated sites are well-documented; exposure can lead to various forms of cancer among other serious health conditions (source: US Environmental Protection Agency). It's time we prioritize our environment and public health over industrial interests.
